520-Million-Year-Old Fossils in China Have Nerve and Verve

       The fossilized remains of Chengjiangocaris kunmingensis, a crustacean-like animal that lived 520 million years ago in what is now Xiaoshiba, China, were detailed in a paper published yesterday by researchers at the University of Cambridge.




      The species’s hard exoskeleton is well-preserved and its nervous system is outlined with such intricacy that individual nerves are distinguishable.

     


     Note that the animal’s ventral cord, the purplish line running down its center, above, is clearly visible. In addition, the tiny fibers that comprise the animal’s bundled ganglia are also detectable with precision instruments.

     This level of soft tissue preservation is rare, especially from the Cambrian period, when life on Earth first blossomed into the rich biodiversity we know today. But the Xiaoshiba fossil deposit, located in China’s Yunnan Province, is "chucky-jam full" of these Cambrian period fossils.




     Readers of PEOTS may remember our forays into the Kunming Karst topography of the Yunnan Province, including the limestone pillars from Kunming installed in a Denver, CO, USA, park.




      “Under normal circumstances it is extremely difficult to obtain preservation of soft tissues, as these decay rapidly and lose most of the morphological information,” according to study co-author Javier Ortega-Hernández, a research fellow at the University of Cambridge.

     “However, there are cases in which the environmental conditions are more prone to produce exceptional preservation,” he said. “These include when the animals are entombed rapidly by a large amount of fine sediment, and all of this occurs in an oxygen-depleted environment. This process helps to limit the extent of decay on the carcasses and may result in the superb preservation of delicate features such as the ventral nerve cord and other parts of the internal anatomy.”


     Studying this extinct animal’s nervous system demonstrated that some of the species’s modern relatives, like velvet worms, maintain a similar internal structure.




          "Others, like the nearly indestructible tardigrades (or water bears), have done away with the complex rubric of nerve fibers found in their Cambrian forebears, in favor of more minimalistic systems. These insights capture a broader evolutionary picture through the aperture of C. kunmingensis’s fossilized nerves."

SpongeBob SquarePants Fungi (Really!) and Possible Sponge Precursor

          Spongiforma squarepantsii is a species of fungus, genus Spongiforma. It was found and described in 2011 in Malaysia. It produces sponge-like, rubbery orange fruit bodies that have a musky or fruity odor.



      And the name comes from the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, of course.






      Like a sponge, these fungi resume their original shape if water is squeezed out. The spores, produced on the surfaces of the hollows of the sponge, are almond-shaped. 

       I discovered the Spongiforma squarepantsii fungi in researching this microfossil which may be a precursor [put your cursor in front ;-)] to the sponge family itself:




      This well-preserved 600-million-year-old fossil shows actual cells that make it an excellent candidate for an ancestor of sponge animals.

      The new discovery, named Eocyathispongia qiania, is a single fossil found in China. Yet its three tubular chambers arising from a base and its visible parts of cells resemble sponges according to  Zongjun Yin et al of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing  in the yesterday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.




         Looking at the fossil with X-rays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the researchers saw cells that resemble modern sponges’ outer structural elements, called pinacocytes (still looking for a pinacolada connection there via pineapple bract structure ;-) ). 

          The link to the Science News article includes this description of this possible sponge ancestor:

         "Some surface cells are signs of pores, like those that let water swoosh into modern sponges. And a patch inside one of the tubes has pits encircled by raised collars. These could be an early version of the cells called choanocytes, distinctive cells in modern sponges that move water through the animal."

           Further examples and connections are needed to make a definitive connection from this single microfossil to the sponges. . .perhaps to SpongeRobert SquarishPants?

Karst and Kunming: Limestone "Forest" Tree-o in Denver, Colorado

         

        This tree-o of limestone "trees" at City of Kunming Park in the Rosedale area of Denver, Colorado, piqued my curiosity about their origin in the limestone "forests" in Yunnan, China:








     The three limestone pieces from the humid climes of China are eroding very quickly in arid Colorado:








     The Stone Forest (Shilin) forms part of the South China karst region that extends over a surface of 500,000 square kilometers in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Provinces:







       Kunming represents one of the world’s most well-preserved examples of humid, tropical to subtropical karst landscapes. There are pinnacles, columns, mushroom- and tree- shaped features formed by limestone dissolution. The 270 million year old limestone "trees" have been likened to giant stalagmites even though they did not form in caves:




      
      Here is a good introduction to KARST TOPOGRAPHY.  


        According to Chinese legend, the stone forest is the birthplace of Ashima, a beautiful girl from the Yi people, an ethnic group from China, Viet Nam, and Thailand. After falling in love, she was forbidden to marry her chosen suitor and instead turned into a stone in the forest.

           

      
              If a stone tree falls in the stone forest. . .? (You must have seen that coming).

. . .And a few plum wonderful images of fruit from the 89 trees I helped plant on my friends' orchard in April, 2008. They were mostly just sticks with a few roots when we planted them. I recall the tamping down the earth around them quite vividly. . .




   The 89 live trees (not stone trees), although they do bear stone fruit!


     These are Flavor King pluots. We also planted Flavor Grenade pluots. . .Yes, they are that good and juicy.


      Just pulled the pin on one of these Flavor Grenades. Perfectly yin yangy.

Blood Oranges, Crustaceans, and the Moon

 
     Wow! The lunar eclipse last night was amazing. The moon was the color of a blood orange for quite awhile after the eclipse:






     It was worth awakening for, except I am pretty tired today. I hope you were able to look up from your phone, computer, or tablet to see it:




     So, this segue to a 520-million-year-old crustacean with preserved cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems found in China may not be the smoothest, but it will be color-coordinated ;-). 

      [One of my favorite memories is of shopping with my four-year-old son. He noticed that everything in our grocery cart was orange when we started shopping.  He suggested we only buy orange things that day. Totally impractical but totally fun! We came home with orange popsicles, pumpkins, carrots, yams, oranges, and other assorted orange things. It was worth needing to go back the next day to get other essentials ;-)].

     In what researchers from the University of Arizona, UK, and China are calling an "invertebrate version of Pompeii," evidence of an especially well-developed cardiovascular system in a three-inch crustacean named Fuxianhuia was discovered in Yunnan Province, China. The system is outlined in carbon and surrounded by mineralized deposits.



         The computer generated model above shows the heart and blood vessels in red, brain and nervous system in dark blue, and digestive system in teal. (Image credit: Nicholas Strausfeld). Eyes and antennae were also preserved.



           The depositional environment is a bit unclear in these half-billion-year-old deposits. The fine dust-like particles are referred to as mudstone with a possible connection to a tsunami (so the volcanic Pompeii analogy doesn't quite work for me.)

Updated P.S.: Natural dyes for eggs made with turmeric, beets, and red cabbage. Kindergarteners and I had a colorful day.




     Look what I found this morning at our grocery store, prominently featured in a large display at the front of the store! They do have a wonderful blend of sweet and tart, jan. Someone had placed a shinier, less wrinkled, similar-shaped orange variety on top of the Sumos. I was not swayed. Thanks for the recommendation.

Fossilized Jurassic Spiders, Other Chelicerata, and Impractical Jokes


     Two weeks ago the horseshoe crab, a marine arthropod, was the topic of Partial Ellipsis of the Sun. This week, another member of the Chelicerata, the spider,  will be the focus.

      Besides the smooth transition from one arthropod to another, I was entranced by this recent large spider discovery from fine volcanic ash beds in Daohugou, China (in Inner Mongolia):



      The giant Jurassic (201-145 million years ago) male spider's body length is 1.65 centimeters long, and its first leg length is 5.82 centimeters, the largest fossilized spider found to date (as of January 8, 2014).  It was significantly different, according to researchers from the University of Kansas, from the female of the species, Nephila jurassica, to warrant an entirely new genus and family. Lots of room for discussion there! :-)

      The researchers believe that this male spider is one of the first orbweaver spiders after a detailed look at foot claws, hairs and genital organs, using a Scanning Electron Microsope (SEM).

                                     GIANT JURASSIC SPIDER IN VOLCANIC ASH

      So, how to get to impractical jokes from this giant Jurassic spider? Via the Jumping Spider, of course:




     

    

     Jumping spiders make up 13 percent of the entire air-breathing chelicerates. While the marine horseshoe crabs rely on external fertilization, air-breathing spiders use internal (but usually indirect) fertilization. 

      The jumping spider is likely the closest to what I was like after a very impractical joke involving the Jurassic time period.

       I worked on an extensive project using aerial photography and Landsat imagery for one of our biggest clients, Amoco Oil Corporation. I wrote a very detailed 200-page, single-spaced, report on the geologic basin (in the days where we had secretaries to type everything from scratch, no computers of course, and no global replace feature).











       The President of our company, Chuck, called me in one day and showed me a letter, written on very fancy, thicker-than-regular-paper AMOCO Oil Company letterhead. It was addressed to him and said something like: "On page 143 of your report we have just received, I see that Jurassic is misspelled as Jurrassic. Jurassic does not have two r's in it. I cannot believe such unprofessional work is coming to us from your company."

       I was a bit concerned, as a newly-minted 23-year-old geologist.

       "What should we do about this, Steph?" asked my boss, looking very serious. "Termination?"  

       It was only then that I heard the crowd of geologists laughing outside Chuck's door. One of my fellow geologist's girlfriend had gotten the AMOCO stationery from her work there and helped with the elaborate impractical joke.

       Jumping Spider indeed!
